Mother’s Day got me to thinking…
Okay, gentlemen, let’s be honest. Moms rule the world. We may have a name on the ballot or on the sign in front of the building, but we all know who the real movers and shakers are. Who do you think calls and makes 90% of all doctors appointments? Who takes the kids to register for school? How often do you think the President of the United States or even Kim Jong Il for that matter, refuse a phone call from Mom? I imagine not very often.
So what do Mom’s got that we don’t got?
First off, let us skip the obvious anatomical features that give women power over men. Much has been written on that subject and I feel that there is little I could contribute. No, I think the real key attribute that makes a Mom has to do with organization and multi-tasking. When it comes to keeping house, raising kids, having a social life, and keeping said family life in order, I cannot compete with my wife. We have equality at the dental office, but there are just things around the house I don’t do very well.
Let us use an example to put this in perspective. In the last twenty-four hours, my wife has done a multitude of things because she just does them better. She has doctored a skinned knee (that’s who the kids cry for first), arranged our social life for the next two weeks, hired babysitters for various functions, made a few routine doctors appointments, handled a few birthday gifts and cards, bought new summer kid’s clothes…the list goes on and on. These are all things that I could do, just not as efficiently as her.
Once, she did let me pack the kids for an overnight trip. I managed to forget diapers and wipes and underwear. Luckily, we weren’t headed into the bush for a week.
So let us all reflect on the Mother’s Day that just passed and remember that we guys have a hard time doing the family thing without them. They keep us all on time and the world relatively tidy.
Thanks, Moms. You rock.
